What being a fat woman is really like

Wednesday, 26 February 2014 | 4 comments

The lovely Claire from Monkey See Monkey Do Monkey Wear tweeted yesterday about this article from Cosmo and asked who would be interested in answering the questions on their blog!

I couldn't wait to get writing ,so below are the questions and my answers:

How do you feel when other woman around you complain about feeling/being fat?

Nothing irks me more than when women moan about feeling fat. Oh I've eaten too much I feel fat, I look fat in this or I feel fat. Duh of course you feel fat, you feel it every time you shower and touch yourself, every time you wash your face or rub your arms, you have fat under your skin so of course you feel it. It doesn't matter what size you are does it?

Has your body image changed since High School/College?

Yes, 100%. At school I hated my body, I was always one of the biggest in my year. The hatred grew worse once I had got to college and spent the whole year being bullied by girls because I was 'too fat' to fit in. As I sit here today I no longer spend endless hours crying because of my size, I don't get upset because there isn't anything to fit me. I can finally look in the mirror and say yes, I am fat but I am a pretty, friendly, nice, sometimes hormonal fat woman.

Have you tried dieting and what happened?

I will keep this short and sweet because I could probably have a Guinness World Record for the longest answer about dieting.

The last diet I went on I lost 4.5 stones, I joined WW and I went to the gym 3 times a week. This soon turned into twice a day. At the weekends I would try and survive on 2 meals a day. During the week before bed I would take laxatives hoping by the morning I would be 1lb or so lighter. I obsessed over everything that I ate. I did it all because I thought life would be better if I was slimmer. Was it? No, I'm far happier when I have a good meal in my tum and that's just the way I am!

Do you think in your case your weight is partly or entirely genetic?

Neither really, I just have a super sweet tooth and enjoy a good meal!

Do you consider yourself healthy? Have there been instances where people assumed you were unhealthy?

I wouldn't say I am healthy but I don't eat crap all the time. Sorry fat bashers, but I do eat fruit and salads everyday. My problem is lack of exercise. I sit down all day at work and then come home and sit down again. I am active at the weekends which I do enjoy, but I have never loved exercise really and if I had a choice of going for a run or reading, well I think you can guess which one would win!
Anyway a thin colleague of mine is partial to battered sausage and chips for lunch once a week, I can tell when people come into the office they instantly think it would be me. Why? Because I am fat they wouldn't even think that actually I enjoy having a salad and crackers for lunch.

Are your parents both supportive of you at the weight that you're at? Have they always been?

I doubt they are but I hope that they still love me no matter size I am.

How do you think retailers can improve clothes for plus size woman?

By asking us what we want to wear! Don't just roll out another hideous oversized collection because you think that will look good on us, ask us what we want to be wearing rather than thinking what we should be wearing.

Do you think plus size woman are judged differently than plus sized men are? How ?

I think that plus size men are always seen as the 'jolly 'ones, they can never be seen as attractive unfortunately, this is a shame because for me personality is super important.

Do you think there is right way or time to express concern about someone's weight?

It if it is a close friend or family member then yes, as long as you do it so you don't offend them. Don't be brash and horrible, nothing worse than that. Definitely don't do it to strangers.

What are the worst things that people have said to you about your body?

Whist I was in the queue for the pool in primary school one of my classmates turned to me and said that my thighs reminded her of two massive loaves of bread! Random I know but that comment, as silly as it seems, has stayed with me for life. My thighs are the one part of my body that I am slightly insecure about.

How did you respond?

I laughed but inside I felt hurt and sick to my stomach. This was the first hateful comment I had about my body and it left me confused. This was the point when I realised that I was bigger than a lot of the girls. I have never forgotten what happened and sometimes when I go near a pool that comment will often pop into my head and off into insecure mode I go!

What have people said (or do you wish they'd say) that would compliment your body or appearance?

I get a lot more compliments on my body nowadays but I think that a lot of that is down to the fact that I feel more confident and I hope that shines through. I'm more happy to try out different items of clothing and am more confident to wear clothes that before I wouldn't have worn because they perhaps highlight my figure, rather than trying to hide it. Also, I have become more confident about my appearance and no longer shy away from bright colours that make me standout from the crowd.

Do you find yourself hanging out with woman closer to your size?

Not really, all my friends are small and I think there is one that is around a 14/16 but most of them are people that I have known for a long time. What I love about blogging as a plus size is the wonderful women that I have met that understand the pains of having to find nice jeans or pretty skirts. I no longer feel like I'm having a fashion battle on my own!

Has your weight affected your sex life, if at all?

When you've been single, has your weight affected your dating life?

I don't think my weight was ever a problem, just the fact that I get crippled by shyness. The thought of talking to men or anyone for that matter made me feel sick. If it wasn't for blind dates and friends I think I would still be single.

Do you feel weird if the guy you're with only dated larger woman?

I think it would be a shame if a guy only wanted to date me purely because of my size and not because they were attracted to my personality.

Do you feel weird if he's only dated slimmer woman before you?

Yes I think I would feel weird because to me that would make it seem like he only wanted to 'try' dating a big girl to see what it was like. This is different for everyone though but that is my own thought.

Thanks for reading!

OMCZ # 26

This is week's OMCZ is a very glamourous one!
Becky wrote:

As it is award season i would love to see some Red Carpet Glamour. Be inspired by some of the amazing outfits that have been down the red carpet and try and incorporate some of the key trends that seem to be appearing (colour blocking, bold colours, black and white) or even try and emulate your favourite stars red carpet look.

I have posted about this dress before as I wore it to my works Christmas party. It's probably the most 'glamorous' dress I own

Dress - Pinkclove
Shoes - Tu - Sainsburys
Bag - Primark

I love this clutch bag and it was only £1!

I have no idea what I was doing here but I thought it would be funny to add in!
You've seen me looking all glamorous so now check out the other lovely ladies taking part!

Curvy Kate

Monday, 24 February 2014 | 1 comment

Last November I went to Plus London. I was so excited to go, especially as I had to miss Plus North due to a little trip to hospital!
Whilst wandering around the event I spotted the Curvy Kate stand. I had only really heard about the brand through various tweets and blog posts. I spoke to the lovely Himare and arranged to get myself measured, something I hadn't had done in a few years. After having my make up done by the lovely Lily Von Pink I went back for my bra fitting. It was pretty cool having it done underneath the railway arches!
Himare was excellent and on the 3rd attempt she got my size, literally just by looking! When she told me my size I nearly fell over in shock, I mean 2 minutes before I was a 40E and then I suddenly became a 38GG! eeek! I have been in a 40e for the past 3-4 years..... oh my poor boobs!
After my fitting I filled out a form to be in with a chance to win £100 worth of Curvy Kate Lingerie, purchased a new dress and then met up with Mr C to start the tedious journey of getting home.
In December I checked my inbox one day whilst at work and to my surprise I received an email from Himare saying that I had won the £100 lingerie competition!

After 2 days of oooohing and aaaahing over the gorgeous sets available, I ended up choosing these three sets:

This one is the Daily Boost in Mocha. Finally, a nude bra suitable for my skin tone. Now I can wear a white shirt without having to worry about wearing a vest top underneath, hurrah!

Next is the Lola Black/Almond. I just fell in love with the print on this one.

Last but not least is the Smoothie Black.

I wasn't feeling brave enough to model them on here (my confidence is getting better but is not that high - yet) but I can say that they are very comfortable, no riding up at the back or straps digging in the shoulders....bliss! Thank you Curvy Kate!

These pieces are from the Autumn/Winter 2013 collection which I don't think is available anymore but do have a look at their website  at the new SS 14 collection. I know that I will be buying a few additional pieces once payday comes around!

The Jacket

Friday, 21 February 2014 | 1 comment

I keep promising myself that I will go into a supermarket and just buy food but well I always seem to fail to do so!

Anyway whilst I was in our local Sainsburys I saw this gorgeous jacket in the sale section. I normally always go for a plain jacket but for some reason this one really caught  my eye.

The print is so different to what I would normally wear so I just thought why not give it a try!

What are your thoughts on prints? Do you like or loathe them?

Simpy be and Anna Scholz

Monday, 17 February 2014 | 1 comment

On Thursday I was lucky enough to be invited to attend a preview of the SimplyBe/Anna Scholz SS14 collections with a champagne high tea. It was held in Anna's studio in London which was really nice as it gave the evening a more personal feel. There were items from Anna's collaboration with Simpy Be as well as pieces from her own White and Black Label SS14 Collections.

After a warm welcome I hung my coat up and wondered off to have a look at the clothes. I was not disappointed. I have quite a love for florals at the moment and this dress (below) totally hit the spot for me.

This dress is needs to be in my wardrobe asap!

There were so many beautiful pieces that I have my eye on, I could hear my debit card (and Mr C) crying at the thought of what I could possibly be spending very soon!

This beautiful jacket is from the S/S14 Black Label.

Isha from An Autumns Grace and Charlotte from Apple Charlotte have written fantastic posts with lots of gorgeous pictures , so if you want to see more of the collection head on over to their websites.

After having a nice chat with some lovely fellow bloggers I then tried a few of the delicious looking cakes, including a macaroon which I have never tried before, they were good - so, so good. After my fill of both edible and visual delights, I hopped on the bus and made my way back to Westfield to meet up with Mr C for a small bit of shopping before the long drive home.

This cute little dog on the bus

A cheeky snog with Mr C ( Sorry couldn't resist that!)
A lovely evening in London thanks to Simply Be and Anna Scholz.

I Feel Good

Sunday, 16 February 2014 | 2 comments

Time for the next I Feel Good challenge.
"You know sometimes when you spend ages getting ready for a night out, an event or even just a blog post, and the reflection in mirror isn't what you hoped?  This challenge is for those times when you look in the mirror, no pre planning involved, and think "I look good today".
We all have our good days and our bad, but this challenge is to record those good days and to remember that confidence, at any size, is beautiful.

OMCZ #26

Wednesday, 12 February 2014 | 4 comments

Time for another OMCZ challenge!

First of all I just want to say thank you to Steph for organising this challenge and keeping it going, if it wasn't for her email reminders I would most definitely forget especially at the moment when all the days seem to be rolling into one!

Anyway enough rambling, this week it was Steph's turn to choose the theme and here is what she wrote:

Theme: Looking Back
Due: 12th February 2014

My theme is looking back and I’d like us to all look back over the last 12 months since the challenge started and see how we have changed.

It doesn’t matter if this is your first or 26th post in this challenge I think it’s be nice for all of us to look back and reflect on how we have changed in 12 months style wise.

For those of us who did #OMCZ 1 you might like to share that post again and  re-do the theme:

Challenge #1: February 27, 2013
Blazing Red - Blazer and Red as the colour to add in the *POP*.  Does not have to be a red blazer, just a blazer with the emphasis colour of red incorporated with the blazer somehow.I think this is a good week to try black nail polish!!!
How would you approach it differently?

For everyone, you might want to show your own take on the "blazing red" theme(you don't have to follow the spcific guidelines given just you take on the name)

Or show us something that 12 months ago you never dreamed you’d wear and now wear on a regular basis.

I'd love it if everyone would say how they feel they have changed style / confidence wise in the past 12 months.
This time last year these were the only two dresses that I owned, the thought of wearing a dress especially after gaining weight from being ill sent a shiver down my spine. My work outfits consisted of a nice top and black trousers and my weekend outfits were once again a nice top and jeans.
Moving on a year and this is what has happened.....
My recent purchase from Peacocks (and it has pockets!)
Since I started blogging and reading other blogs it has made me feel more confident about trying different items of clothing. I now have 17 dresses (not all pictured) and most days I find that they are the one piece of clothing that I reach for first.
It's taken me a long time to realise that I might actually look good in a dress and if people don't like it then that's their problem, as long as I'm happy and comfortable then me and bubble butt (thanks to Leah for introducing me to this!) will wear as many dresses as we want to!
Now you've had a good old look at me why not check out the other lovely ladies taking part!

Dressing Up

Monday, 10 February 2014 | 1 comment

A few weeks ago I had a quick look at the New Look sale. I had my eye on a dress for quite awhile but was unsure about wearing a full print. Anyway one evening I went online again and saw that they only had a few left, I took that as a sign that I should order it!

I wore it on Saturday night on our weekend away for dinner. I'm so glad I bought it, it fits so well, there was enough room to accommodate my expanding waist whilst eating the delicious 3 course meal!

It also fit really well over my ample bottom. I 've tried to get along with skater dresses but the love just isn't there sadly. I kept accessories to a minimum and just wore a simple bracelet.

I'm loving wearing dresses at the moment and will be on the look for some more, especially with a print like this one!
If you have any recommendation for where else to get nice dresses let me know!

Taking Shape SS14

Friday, 7 February 2014 | No comments

It's finally starting to look like spring is on its way. After a miserable wet winter I can't wait!

Taking Shape will be launching their SS14 collection soon in store and online. Here is a sneak peak of some of the items that will be available

Bronte Dress - £55

Hi Lo Top - £29
Cut Out Tunic - £25
Gecko Trousers - £39

Dalmation Dress - £55
Taking Shape offer free styling sessions in their stores, I'm one to stick with clothes that I know will suit me so having a styling session can be a nice way of finding new pieces that allow you to step out of your comfort zone.  Click here to find a store near you.
So to get ready for the warmer weather why not have a Spring Clean, here are Taking Shapes tips for giving your wardrobe a freshen up.
  • Pull out anything that you haven't worn in the last year, including shoes!
  • Try it on and put it into an outfit. If you love it, take a photo so you can remember what it looks good with
  • If you don't love it, give to someone who will
  • Only keep items that make you look and feel good- get rid of that tiny dress from ten years ago you bought on holiday. It don't do your self confidence any good to see it hanging in your wardrobe every day.
  • Decide where the gaps are in your wardrobe so you can shop for what you need rather than buying items that don't go with the rest of your clothes.
  • Invest in solid and good basics. It's no good spending top dollar on a jacket you rarely wear if you're wearing frumpy old jeans everyday.
  • Finally - get an honest friend to help you with the process. With two of you doing a spring clean it's twice fun.
I will be giving my wardrobe a clear out soon ready for one or two items from the Taking Shape SS14 collection!
Much Love

Weekend Away

Monday, 3 February 2014 | 2 comments

On Saturday Mr C whisked me away for the weekend to a lovely hotel in Surrey as an early birthday treat.

We went to Ghyll Manor Hotel in Rusper, a lovely hotel in the middle of nowhere or so it seemed! I was hoping to go shopping before we got there so we stopped in Redhill. I wasn't sure what to expect but it was ok, no major shops but enough to have a little potter around. I managed to pick up some real techniques brushes in Superdrug as a little present to myself.

After wandering around and waiting for the heavy rain to pass we made our way to the hotel. This turned out to be quite an adventure as some roads were closed or flooded due to the heavy rain, thank goodness for sat navs!

We had a quick afternoon nap, a delicious afternoon tea and then went down to dinner. I can honestly say that it was one of the best meals that I've ever had. My starter was crispy pork nuggets with apple compote, followed by pork cheeks with chorizo, butter beans in a tomato sauce and to finish golden syrup pudding with cream anglaise. Mr C enjoyed his mushroom pate, shin of beef and chocolate covered pear. Yum Yum!

Lovely afternoon tea

Waiting for my full English!

Sunday going home outfit

It was back home on Sunday nice and early so as to avoid too much traffic on the dreaded M25 and to unpack before an afternoon of rest ready for another Monday morning!

Did you have a nice weekend?
